Vasiliy Lomachenko got back in this win column this weekend in Las Vegas. Late Saturday night, Lomachenko finished Masayoshi Nakatani by knockout in the ninth-round. The dominant win was soon followed by the victor asking for a shot at getting his belts back.
“Everybody has been waiting for the rematch, so, let’s make the rematch” Lomachenko said after the fight. Teofimo Lopez cashed as a +310 underdog against Lomachenko in their bout on October 2020. If the current champion wants to honor the rematch request, it will have to come after his fight with George Kambosos Jr. this coming August.
Teofimo Sr. has already stated that a rematch could certainly take place in December, and even offered up the idea of Madison Square Garden as a venue. Both fighters remain under contract with Top Rank so it certainly seems that this matchup will be made at some point. We just need to see just what concessions Lomachenko agrees to.
“We took that first fight without a rematch clause and got treated like shit throughout” said Lopez’ manager Dave McWater. The champion will not only be pursuing an equal purse to their first bout, but likely a rematch clause as well. I am happy to see all the value being extracted out of Lopez as the A-side, as the camp secured a very strong purse with Triller for his upcoming bout as well.
The matchup I would rather see is Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko, but I do not blame Tank for turning that down. We will have to see what plays out in the coming months at lightweight but my money is on this rematch coming together.
